CHICORY POWDER is extracted from the plant Cichorium intybus which exhibits antimicrobial activity due to the presence of organic acids like oxalic acid, succinic acid, shikimic acid, quinic acid which help to decrease formation of bioflim and bacteria adhesion to cells. It contains lactucin and lactucopicrin which give antimalarial activity. It also has esculetin, cichotyboside, a guaianolide sesquiterpene glycoside which give hepatoprotective effect. Due to the presence of caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid, it acts as an anti-diabetic by increasing glucose uptake. A new antidiabetic compound naming chicoric acid is found in this plant which exhibits insulin sensitizing as well as insulin secreting properties. It also shows antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective properties.
