CEFOTAXIME is an intravenous cephalosporin antibiotic of the third generation. It has broad spectrum of activity against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis but it does not work against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It possesses penicillinases resistance which makes it useful against infections resistant to penicillin derivatives. It is used to treat meningitis, pyelonephritis, urinary tract infections and gonorrhea. It is also used before surgery to prevent infection.
