VITAMIN K1 is very important for the production of active prothrombin, proconvertin, plasma thromboplastin component and Stuart factor. It acts as an essential cofactor of microsomal enzyme which catalyzes post-translational carboxylation of glutamic acid residues into inactive hepatic precursors of these factors and then the resulting gamma-carboxy-glutamic acid residues convert these precursors into active coagulation factors which are release by liver cells into the blood. It is most useful in the treatment and management of hemorrhagic disease of newborn.
